Els autors estudien cada família tenint en compte els aspectes genealògics, les estratègies familiars de matrimoni i herència, la base patrimonial i econòmica i la projecció política. En conjunt, les quatre històries familiars són molt representatives de la diversitat d'origen i fortuna de la noblesa i del funcionament del grup més privilegiat de la societat de l'Antic Règim. A través d'aquestes històries familiars, el lector podrà endinsar-se en el passat de diverses poblacions catalanes, com les de Llupià, Castellnou, Bages, Conat, Montner i Vilanova de la Raó, al Rosselló i Cerdanya ; Calella, al Maresme ; Torredembarra, Vespella, Cunit i Cubelles, al Tarragonès i Baix Penedès, Barcelona i moltes altres. Tanmateix, aquest llibre és molt més que una monografia clàssica i s'endinsa en l'anàlisi detingut d'esdeveniments cabdals de la història del Rosselló i de Catalunya i de les seves respectives institucions, vistos a través de l'actuació de personatges conspicus que hi van jugar un paper cabdal. Finalment, l'obra conté una gens dissimulada reivindicació dels comtats de Rosselló i Cerdanya, és a dir, dels territoris catalans situats al nord dels Pirineus i de les relacions multiseculars que van existir i encara existeixen entre països units per una mateixa parla i cultura. La trajectòria dels Llupià, un llinatge nobiliari multinacional, i dels Icard, Roger i Vallseca, ens ajuda a comprendre els profunds llaços que durant segles van unir ambdós costats de la serralada pirinenca esdevinguda frontera política a partir de 1659.
